Children need to read a lot in order to be able to learn. I strongly encourage all parents to encourage your children to read at home, in addition to school work. This reading can be comics, magazines, newspapers, books, it can be online, on an e-reader, or in physical form. Children who read at least 20 minutes every single day tend to do much better in school, and in life. Of course, they can read more if they wish. My younger son has read for 30-60 minutes every single day since he started Kindergarten; he is a college student, and he still reads every day. I read a minimum of 30 minutes a day beyond what I do for work, and I have done so ever since I started Kindergarten - that's a lot of years!

James Patterson on "How to get your kid to be a fanatic reader"
Patterson's Middle School books are very popular in our school library. He's also a strong advocate for books and for reading. This article was written three years ago, but his advice is still sound.
BTW - your children will find lots of great reading choices in our school library, for those voracious Bookavores as well as the very picky readers.
